RAWALPINDI: Pakistan’s military courts have sentenced 25 individuals involved in the May 9, 2023, attacks on military installations, according to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR).

The ISPR stated that the Field General Court Martial has announced punishments for the accused in the first phase. The suspects were found guilty of participating in violent acts during the May 9 protests, which erupted following the arrest of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chairman Imran Khan in a corruption case.

The protests led to widespread arrests, and over 100 civilians are currently facing military trials. PTI, however, has denied any involvement in the attacks, including those on the General Headquarters (GHQ), and has called for an independent judicial probe.

Sentences Announced by Military Courts

Among those convicted, individuals received sentences ranging from two to ten years of rigorous imprisonment. Key details include:

  • Jinnah House Incident: Several convicts received up to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment.
  • General Headquarters (GHQ) Attack: Suspects involved were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
  • Punjab Regimental Centre Mardan: Sentences include up to 10 years imprisonment.
  • PAF Base Mianwali: Several individuals received 10-year sentences.

The military’s media wing confirmed that the sentences for other accused individuals will be announced once the legal process is complete. The ISPR also emphasized that all convicts retain the right to appeal as per the Constitution and laws of Pakistan.

May 9: A “Dark Chapter” in Pakistan’s History

The ISPR described the May 9 incidents as politically motivated violence that targeted military installations and desecrated national symbols, including monuments dedicated to martyrs.

“These acts of political terrorism were an unacceptable attempt to impose a perverted agenda through violence and coercion,” the statement read.

Ongoing Investigations and Future Actions

The ISPR clarified that investigations were conducted meticulously, leading to legal proceedings based on irrefutable evidence. While military trials have concluded for some individuals, anti-terrorism courts are handling several related cases.

The ISPR reiterated its resolve to bring the masterminds behind the May 9 events to justice, emphasizing that true accountability will be achieved only when those responsible for orchestrating the violence are punished under the law.

“The state will ensure the establishment of its writ and uproot violence-driven politics,” the ISPR asserted.

Prominent Figures Under Scrutiny

The developments come as Imran Khan faces allegations of inciting violence against the military. Former ISI chief General Faiz Hamid is also under investigation on similar charges.
